In 1969 the federal government of South Africa recognized a necessity for legal aid, and responded by creating the South African Legal Aid Board which began its work in 1971 and now offers the vast majority of legal aid throughout the nation. The Board has autonomy and is independent from authorities in its determination-making, and has sole jurisdiction over figuring out the supply of legal aid. The Board provides legal aid to all “qualifying indigent people” with an earnings of R600.00 or much less.
